Auto-Generated Prices

Auto-generated prices are the local prices Apple and Google build for every other storefront from your one base price, using exchange rates and rounding. They convert your currency, not local buying power.

Definition

What auto-generated prices are

When you set a single base price for an app, in-app purchase, or subscription, both stores generate a local price for every other market from it. Apple calls this automatically generating prices across its other storefronts, roughly 175 of them; Google Play converts your base into local prices the same way. Each generated price accounts for the exchange rate and local tax and follows a local rounding convention, so it looks native.

What they get right, and what they miss

Auto-generated prices are currency-correct. They are not purchasing-power-correct. A price converted from a US wallet is still a US-sized price in a market that earns far less, which is the gap localized pricing and purchasing power parity exist to close. Generated prices also have to land on an existing price point, so rounding can push a market's price a rung above or below what you would have chosen.

They do not stay put on their own

Apple periodically re-generates app and one-time-purchase prices as exchange rates move, keeping them equalized with your base, but it excludes auto-renewable subscriptions. Google Play freezes every generated price at the rate on the day you set it until you refresh it by hand. Either way, the default grid is a starting point, not a decision.

Examples

Example

You type $9.99 as your base price. The stores generate about 175 local prices from it: roughly ₹830 in India, R$50 in Brazil, and so on. Every number is a clean local figure at that day's exchange rate, and not one of them reflects what those markets actually pay for comparable apps.

Frequently asked

What are auto-generated prices on the App Store and Google Play?

They are the local prices both stores create for every other market from your one base price, using the exchange rate, local tax, and a rounding convention. Apple generates them across roughly 175 storefronts; Google Play converts your base the same way.

Are auto-generated prices localized?

Only in the currency sense. They convert your base price into each local currency, but they do not adjust for what a market can actually pay. A converted US price is still too high for a lower-income market, which is what purchasing-power pricing fixes.

Do auto-generated prices update over time?

Apple periodically re-generates app and in-app-purchase prices as exchange rates move, but not subscriptions. Google Play freezes them at the rate on the day you set the price until you refresh manually.
